Products / Liveaboards / South East Asia/ Dive Komodo

Dive Komodo offers a liveaboard with character and comfort located in the very heart of Komodo National Park

Dive Komodo - sail and dive! DiveKomodo runs a first class liveaboard motorised sailing vessel. It is permanently based in the Komodo region of Indonesia at Labuanbajo on the island of Flores. Join DiveKomodo for an unforgettable adventure, diving and exploring the spectacular environment of the Komodo World Heritage area. As well as the fantastic diving, discover the unique culture of the region, the magnificent landscape, the fishermen selling pearls from flimsy canoes, the deserted pink sand beaches, calm waters, and of course the dragons ever present in the surrounding mountains.

Komodo Island & Marine Park

Clear waters in Indonesia Komodo is situated 200 nautical miles east of Bali between the islands of Flores and Sumbawa. Komodo's symbol of international fame is the Komodo dragon -the world's largest living Lizard. Indonesia declared the area a National Park in 1980, and in 1992 Komodo was declared a World Heritage Site. It covers 239,000 Hectares including 75,000 Hectares of land on 4 major and numerous minor islands.
Komodo is unique because it offers two totally different marine environments. In the north you experience the warm clear waters that flow from the Flores and Banda Seas. Here, the hard coral reefs are extensive and in pristine condition. To the south, you encounter cooler waters that flow from deep in the Indian Ocean. It is not unusual to encounter whales, whale sharks, mantas, sunfish and other planktonic feeders during dives on the southern sites. Upwellings, caused by deep ocean currents colliding with the continental shelf force an endless supply of planktonic food towards the surface resulting in rich coral gardens and an exceptional quantity of marine life. The confluence of these two distinct marine ecospheres is responsible for the remarkable diversity found in the waters of Komodo.

Sand eelThis region is generally undocumented and remains largely unexplored and exciting new dive sites are constantly being discovered.
Riding the waterways are endless schools of pelagic fish, manta rays, whales, dolphins, even the occasional dugong. Below, the seabed is covered with a thick carpet of florescent corals and marine invertebrates - an underwater photographers paradise. The seas surrounding the park boil with feeding fish and marine mammals.
An estimated 900-1,000 fish species make Komodo National Park one of the world's richest fish habitats.
A total of 253 scleractinian (reef building) coral species reside within the Park and at nearby Banta Island. The KNP area supports a particularly high abundance of Tubipora musica (organ pipe coral), which make up some of the distinctly pink coral sand beaches. Water temperature varies between 20 - 28 Degrees Celcius (68-85 °F) , cooler water is experienced on the southern (Indian Ocean) sites.
Visibility range is 10 - 50M year round with traditionally clearer water on northern sites.

Itinerary
Every week Dive Komodo operates 6day/5night liveaboard excursions on a Sunday to Friday basis.
The vessel is based at Labuanbajo on the island of Flores - a 2 hour domestic flight from Bali, this means that your cruise starts & finishes right in the heart of Komodo. Clients need to be at Denpasar domestic airport by 8am on the scheduled day of departure. Arrival into Bali is usually required the day prior to our scheduled departure. Return flights get back to Bali at about 3pm. The itinerary itself incorporates the very best of the remote North & South Komodo dive sites in areas such as Pink Sand Beach, South Rinca, Nusa Kode & Padar
